Crystal Palace 3-0 Coventry United
Elise Hughes scored a stoppage-time winner in her
second game as a Crystal Palace player as they rose to the top of the Championship with a comfortable win over Coventry United. Elise was on the bench
after starting the first game, but she entered the fray after half time and
it’s fair to say she made an impact. She set up Palace’s second goal shortly
after the hour mark, before going on to get the winner with a left-footed shot
from close range.
Anna Filbey, who also made her debut last week, kept her place in the starting line-up and had several attempts on goal, in addition to worrying Coventry with her clever passing. At first, Palace had difficulty in breaking down Coventry United’s determined defensive play, but the game changed when Anna set up Molly-Mae Sharp for the second goal with a beautifully-timed pass.
Rich at Eagle-Eyed Football named Anna as his Player of the Match, citing her involvement in a number of attacks as well as her assist, though
he was also very impressed with Elise, who gave the team an extra spark.
Evie Gane and Meesha Dudley-Jones kept their starting places for Coventry United. Meesha came close to a goal shortly before half-time, but it wasn’t to be for the away side. (By the way, I do call the men by their first names too. It does get confusing when all three Joes are playing for Wales, but I do try not to conform if I can help it so why start now?)
Sheffield United 2-0 Durham
Bethan Davies kept her place in goal and also a clean
sheet as Sheffield United got their first win of the season. Bethan was called
into action early in the match, making an acrobatic save to prevent Durham fromtaking the lead, but soon Sheffield United took control. They had a number of
attempts before their first goal arrived shortly after the restart. Durham very
nearly got an immediate equaliser, but Bethan produced an outstanding save, pushing
the ball onto the bar, and it was Sheffield United who scored the only other
goal of the match to give them a solid 2-0 win.
Maria Francis-Jones is still waiting for her
Sheffield United debut. Both she and Georgia Walters were unused
substitutes.
