The recent achievements of England in the European Championships have really helped to raise the profile in women’s football, but now it’s time for Wales to qualify for a major tournament.
However, concerns remain about investment in the women's game and the difficulty of accessing a football team in some parts of Wales. All this and more is discussed in an excellent article from Dai Sport.
Crystal Palace will begin the 2022-23 season with no fewer than fifteen new players, including Anna Filbey and Elise Hughes, both of whom left Charlton Athletic at the end of last season. Palace are hoping for promotion to the Women’s Super League after finishing fourth in the Women’s Championship last season and setting a new club record.
Poppy Soper has signed for Charlton Athletic. Poppy
spent last season at Chelsea and Plymouth Argyle on a dual registration and although
she didn’t play for Chelsea (impact substitutions don’t really happen to goalkeepers
and they tend to like each other too much to kick each other in training), she did get to be a substitute and she was able to take advantage of their top-class
training. Poppy is the second goalkeeper to sign for Charlton this season and
both are seen by FAWSL Full-Time as being in contention to be Charlton’s first-choice.
Lily Stevens won a penalty for Oxford United in the Under
21’s home friendly against Tottenham Hotspur. Lily was tripped after reaching
the ball marginally ahead of the defender, and the resulting penalty was the
first of four goals that were scored by Oxford without reply. The team line-up seems
to imply Lily was replaced after just 30 minutes, which is worrying, but she
did enough in that time to be described as ‘excellent’ by the club’s website.
