News and Match Reports 21/08/22 (Fishlock, J Green, Ingle, F Morgan)

OL Reign-2-1 Racing Louisville FC

Jess Fishlock and her OL Reign team-mates are the winners of the Women's Cup after coming from behind to win 2-1. OL Reign dominated from the start, with Jess just one of the players to have an early chance, though her shot was too high. Louisville’s goal was very much against the run of play, but OL Reign equalised early in the second half and went on to score the goal which won not just the match but the league.

Leicester City 3-1 Reading (friendly)

Josie Green was part of Leicester’s team and she was certainly on the pitch at the end to celebrate the winning goal. This was Leicester’s first friendly of the season against a Super League team, but it’s fair to say they didn’t struggle too much. Reading were actually the first to find the back of the net, but Leicester equalised after half an hour. The scores remained level until the final twenty minutes of the match, when Leicester took the lead – and they weren’t finished yet.

Portland Thorns 0-1 Chelsea (Women’s International Champions Cup/friendly)

Sophie Ingle started for Chelsea in this third place play-off against tournament host Portland Thorns. The match was goalless for the first half, but Chelsea scored around the hour mark and held on to take the football’s equivalent of the bronze medal.

Bristol City’s last pre-season began with just five senior players and no goalkeeper. But manager Lauren Smith still got them to third place and they hope to build on that this year after a strong pre-season in which Ffion Morgan has been one of the star players.
