Bristol City 2-0 Blackburn Rovers
Bristol City made it two wins in two games with a home win over Blackburn Rovers. The result would almost
certainly have been different had Blackburn been awarded a penalty in the early
stages of the game, but the appeals were waved away.
The home side took control with several attempts on goal before finding the back of the net after less than fifteen minutes. Ella Powell came into the starting line-up for this match and it proved to be a good decision when a spectacular save was needed to prevent Ella’s shot from reaching the top right corner. The second goal was scored shortly before half-time.
Ffion Morgan joined the
fray for Bristol City for the second half and had an immediate impact, losing
her marker and very nearly setting up a third goal. Tianna Teisar came
off the bench in the closing minutes according to Bristol City’s website, but
Blackburn, who were admittedly very distracted at the time, have her down as an
unused substitute.
Ellie Leek and Lauren
Thomas started for Blackburn, with Chloe Williams making her debut
in the 59th minute. It might not have been a dream debut, but
Blackburn didn’t concede a single goal when she was on the pitch.
Charlton Athletic 3-4 London City Lionesses
London City Lionesses raced into a 2-0 lead in the first fifteen minutes, exposing Charlton’s weakness in dealing
with set pieces and taking full advantage. Charlton won a penalty, which was confidently
scored, and then managed to equalise shortly after half time, but the Lionesses
weren’t fazed by this. With set pieces continuing to be a difficulty for
Charlton, London City scored two more goals. Even when one of their players
received lengthy treatment on the pitch before leaving the ground in an
ambulance, the Lionesses remained focused and held on to their lead.
Charlton kept attacking and managed
to get one back in the twenty-fourth minute of stoppage time, but they were
unable to find another goal to give them a share of the points. There are clear
defensive concerns for Charlton, but the fact they were able to score three
against a team that’s looking really strong, both physically and mentally, is
certainly a positive they can take from this game.
Poppy Soper was on the
bench for Charlton.
Lewes 2-2 Southampton
Southampton came back from 2-0 down to draw with Lewes and
get their first points of the season. Alice Griffiths came close to opening the scoring for Southampton early in the first half, but her shot went
just wide. Lewes then took control, going 1-0 up after 16 minutes. They came
close to an equaliser shortly afterwards, but Alice’s shot was wide again. Lewes
claimed their second goal at the end of the first half.
In the second half, however, Southampton were like a different team. Megan
Wynne was a 58th-minute substitute and her introduction gave
Southampton fresh impetus and brought them back into the game. Southampton soon
got their first goal and they nearly doubled it not long afterwards when
another ball from Megan caused chaos in the Lewes defence.
On that occasion, they managed to clear, but Southampton were dominant now and the equaliser was not long in coming. Southampton very nearly snatched all three points at the death, but after a disappointing start, there are a lot of promising signs.
