Arsenal opened the Women's Super League season with a 4-0 hammering of Brighton & Hove Albion. If anyone is likely to topple Chelsea from the top of the league table come the end of the season, the general consensus is that it's most likely to be Arsenal - and a comprehensive win was a great way to start..
Not that Arsenal are entirely happy - and this is no bad thing. Even Chelsea have the potential to improve and the fact Arsenal are noticing their imperfections so soon after an excellent result is a sign of their determination to be the best they can be. (Highlights available on the link above.)Brighton didn't really make things easy for themselves when they got a red card in the seventh minute, but one of the common clichés of football is that it's harder to play against ten players and like most clichés, it is sometimes true. Brighton in fact almost did take the lead not long after going down to ten players, but Elisabeth Terland shot wide.
But Arsenal aren't seen as potential title contenders for nothing. Kim Little is back at Arsenal following a summer loan spell at OL Reign, playing alongside stars including Megan Rapinoe and Jess Fishlock, She put Arsenal ahead on 28 minutes with a powerful finish. Further attempts were thwarted by the crossbar and by Brighton goalkeeper Megan Walsh, and Brighton were perhaps relieved to be only one goal down at the break.
A half-time substitution by Brighton nearly led to an equaliser, but Arsenal survived and it was then that they began to take control. Stina Blackstenius stuck one into the top corner from top range five minutes into the second half and World Cup's Player of the Year Beth Mead followed up with a strike into the bottom corner. Beth wrapped things up seven minutes from time when she fooled not only Megan Walsh but Kayleigh Green, sending the ball into an empty net.
Kayleigh played at centre back for the first time since she was sixteen, but she says she'll play anywhere. She felt the team showed character and desire, she's proud of them and there are positives. Brighton had to change their tactics and formation very early on, but they didn't give up, they did create chances - and they won't be playing away to Arsenal with ten players every week.
