Women's Championship Results Part 1 (played 18/9/22) (C Bull, Clark, Estcourt, Filbey, Elise Hughes, F Morgan, Powell, Teisar,)

Bristol City 1-0 Sunderland

Bristol City got their third win and third clean sheet in three games, but it wasn't an easy afternoon against a strong and physical Sunderland team.  A couple of early shots were off-target for Bristol City, then Chloe Mustaki had a penalty appeal rejected. Abi Harrison had the ball in the net shortly before half-time, but it was disallowed for a foul on Claudia Moan.

In the second half, Bristol City took the lead when Abi Harrison found Shania Hayles. Shania had scored in Bristol City's previous game, a victory over Blackburn Rovers, and she did the same again on Sunday, calmly putting the ball into the net.

Ella Powell started for Bristol City. Ffion Morgan and Chloe Bull entered the fray in a double substitution on 61 minutes. Tianna Teisar came onto the pitch in the penultimate minute of normal time. Olivia Clark was an unused substitute.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Southampton

It all started very well for Crystal Palace when a record crowd filled Selhurst Park, but Southampton not only won the match - their first victory of the season - they ended Palace's unbeaten start to the season.

Southampton signalled their intent when they nearly took the lead in the opening minutes and their opening goal came shortly afterwards, Lexi Lloyd-Smith finishing emphatically. Palace had the ball in the net shortly afterwards, but they were denied by the offside flag and later had a shocked blocked on the line after it was dropped by the keeper. Palace's pressure continued and they equalised in injury time through Coral Haines.

Southampton clearly had an... inspiring half-time talk as they dominated in the second half and not long after the restart, Lexi got her second goal. This woke Palace up a bit and they caused more problems for Southampton, who were themselves hardly without chances, but the game finished 2-1 to Southampton.

Anna Filbey started for Crystal Palace. Elise Hughes was a 69th-minute substitute. Alice Griffiths and Megan Wynne came off the bench for Southampton in a double substitution on 82 minutes.

Charlton Athletic 3-0 Birmingham City

Charlie Estcourt made her debut for Birmingham City not long after the signing was announced, but it was a disappointing day for her.

It nearly started well, with Charlie Devlin taking an early shot at goal, but it was saved by Charlton keeper Sian Rogers. Charlton took the lead shortly after that through Ella Rutherford's left-footed shot to the bottom corner. Libby Smith and Mollie Green both tried to get Birmingham back on immediate level terms, but their shots were saved.

Charlton suffered a potential nightmare when not one but two players went off injured in the first half, but at the end of the first half, Charlton doubled their lead. Emily Simpkins' corner caused chaos and Angela Addison took full advantage.

Ella Rutherford was on the attack again in the second half, but although she didn't add to her tally, her shot hit Lucy Thomas and went in, being marked down as an own goal for the keeper. Tegan McGowan was an 85th-minute substitute for Charlton and clearly wasn't happy to settle for 3-0 and kept fighting for a fourth, winning a free kick in stoppage time.

Charlton's substitute keeper Poppy Soper finds herself in the same position as many second-choice keepers. The Goalkeepers' Union means they're usually happy to see the first-choice doing well, but it does tend to reduce their chances of playing.
