Women's League Cup Part 3 (played 2/10/22) (Dudley-Jones, Gemma Evans, Griffiths, Gane, Hoare, McAteer, Rowe, Woodham, Wynne)

If you have no idea what's going on with regard to how the competition works and why teams who lost haven't been knocked out, this page might help you. On the other hand, it might not....

GROUP E

Coventry United 2-0 Southampton

Coventry United haven’t been doing so well in the league, but they made up for it today. The game started slowly, though Megan Wynne, restored to the starting line-up, nearly helped Southampton into the perfect start when she dodged her marker got down the wing and sent in a cross which none of her team-mates quite got to. Alice Griffiths also started for Southampton

Meesha Dudley-Jones grabbed her first goal for Coventry United in the 50th minute following a mix-up in the box. Coventry’s second arrived five minutes later - both goals were assisted by Aston Villa loanee Mary McAteer. Meesha and Mary were part of a three-player attack, while Hayley Hoare was on the right of a centre back trio. Evie Gane was a 76th-minute substitute.

Southampton came alive again in the closing stages of the game, but it was Coventry who left with the points and the advantage in the race to win the group.

Reading 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur

record crowd were at Reading to watch their match against Tottenham Hotspur, but it was Tottenham who took an early lead. Reading played very well and had a number of attempts to equalise, but they were unlucky and their hopes suffered another setback when Tottenham got their second after just half an hour.

Reading started the second half brightly and no-one quite knows how a set piece from Lily Woodham didn’t result in a goal. Gemma Evans was involved as another set piece from Reading seriously worried Tottenham’s defence, but again, the ball would not go into the net. Rachel Rowe, who was captain for the day, also put pressure on Tottenham, but it wasn’t until the eleventh minute of stoppage time that Reading finally got the goal their performance deserved when they were awarded a penalty. This was dispatched, but there wasn’t enough time for another and Tottenham somehow held on to win.

Coventry United are top, ahead of Tottenham on goal difference. Reading and Southampton… you can work it out.
